Evaluation -

The unusual feature of this piece was the order in which I completed it. Usually, I would start a painting with background colours and leave the central figure until last, to ensure it stands out and infant of the background, to gain better perspective. Instead, this piece was created somewhat chaotically, the background being completed after the main acrylic portion being complete. After reflecting on this, I think it makes sense within the piece and is cohesive with my self expression, as the idea being centred around the loosing of time is highlighted more so with the piece.

The concept of 'Running Out of Time' came from needing to express the amount of pressure I felt in moments of painting such, and how I constantly feel like I have to be moving and exploring, so I wanted to document the overwhelming feeling. Surprisingly, I feel that the writing at the bottom strengthens the piece ( Inspiration stemming from Tracey Emin: The Loneliness of the Soul RA Academy Exhibition), and matches the emotional atmosphere, without giving too much of the painting away. This was interesting to me, as I usually feel that words and type take away from the original message and make the piece extremely literal and readable, which `I feel can undermine paintings and make them easy to glance at and not stop infront of.

The charcoal element pulled the whole piece together, and also worked really well giving more definition between the background and the actual piece.

I feel that personally I could have pushed myself further into the ideas surrounding collage and painting, without it just being used as a feature within a painting. This made me realise that I need to let go of painting as a safety net and fully explore within the tasks. This comes with realising the amount of pressure I have put my creativity under , to constantly be or look good when even if its a process it will develop with time and doesn't need to be very good - mistakes will create development. This piece really taught me the importance of order and also how to experiment by mixing medias, canvases not having to stay two dimensional. Even though I feel this painting is a very strong example of my work, and helped to develop technical skills, I feel disappointed in terms of the lack of relation to the rest of my work from the Fine Art section. The painting could have been explosive and come from a movement such as Dada, or Surrealism, especially with the brief being so open and also after looking into artists such as Hannah Hoch. If I have spare time, I think it would be developmental to create either a textile based collage or an extremely experimental collage - based painting.
